Sir Ronald Cohen

Philanthropist, Founder and Chairman, The Portland Trust

A pioneer of the idea of social investment, the Egyptian-born financier has been a prolific donor to social, educational and Jewish charities. Perhaps more importantly, he has been a tireless campaigner for the use of entrepreneurial practices to obtain higher social and financial returns from social investment. In this context, he has been chairman of the Social Investment Task Force, co-founder and chairman of sustainable growth investor Bridges Ventures, co-founder of the Portland Trust which aims to relieve poverty in Israel through entrepreneurship, and co-founder of Social Finance UK, which works to create a social investment market in the UK. From 2011 to 2013 he was chairman of Big Society Capital, Britain’s first social investment bank.
