Harvey McGrath

Philanthropist and Chairman, Big Society Capital

A former chairman of Prudential and Man Group, McGrath first became involved in giving while working in New York in the 1980s when a colleague who suffered from polio inspired him to support polio charity March of the Dimes. Returning to London in 1990, he began supporting causes that channeled business wealth into good causes. McGrath has become a pioneer of social investment, standing as chair of the East London Business Alliance and establishing New Philanthropy Capital. In 2014 he took over from Sir Ronald Cohen as chair of Big Society Capital, which claims to be the world’s first social investment bank. He is also chairman of Heart of the City, which encourages companies to develop corporate social responsibility, as well as of the Prince’s Teaching Institute. In 2013 he received the Beacon Award for Philanthropy.
