Katy McLean, MBE

Rugby player

Having lost in the final in three successive World Cups – in 2002, 2006 and 2010 – England’s women’s rugby team showed extraordinary spirit to defeat Canada 21-9 to lift the trophy in August last year. The team’s 28-year-old captain Katy McLean deserves much of the credit for the unbreakable collective spirit of a team that has to fit its training and playing around day jobs (their occupations include plumber, teacher, vet and lifeguard).
