Schemes

This is a full list of the grant schemes provided by the Royal Society.

Early career schemes

• University Research Fellowship: For outstanding scientists in the UK at an early to mid-stage of their research career who have the potential to become leaders in their field.
• Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship: For outstanding scientists in the UK at an early stage of their research career who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as parenting or caring responsibilities or health issues.
• Sir Henry Dale Fellowship: For outstanding post-doctoral scientists wishing to build their own UK-based, independent research career addressing an important biomedical question.
• Newton International Fellowship: For non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK.

We also provide the Education Research Fellowship for early-career academics in the UK researching physics and mathematics education and the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for early-career scientists in the UK who want to conduct research in Japan.

Senior career schemes

• Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award: For outstanding scientists who would benefit from a five year salary enhancement to help recruit them to or retain them in the UK.
• Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship: For scientists who would benefit from a period of full-time research without teaching and administrative duties for a period of up to one year.
• Royal Society Research Professorship: For world-class scientists who would benefit from long-term support to allow them to focus on research and collaboration based at an institution in the UK.
• Royal Society Professorship for Public Engagement in Science: For a well-established scientist with exceptional scientific communication skills and media experience to support the Society’s public engagement work.

Innovation and industry schemes

• Industry Fellowship: For academic scientists who want to work on a collaborative project with industry and for scientists in industry who want to work on a collaborative project with an academic organisation.
• Brian Mercer Feasibility Award: For scientists who wish to investigate the feasibility of commercialising an aspect of their research.
• Brian Mercer Award for Innovation: For scientists who wish to develop an already proven concept or prototype into a near-market product, ready for commercial exploitation.
• Paul Instrument Fund: For scientists in the UK who want to design and construct a novel instrument to measure phenomena in the physical sciences.
• Mercer Prize: For scientists whose research has been commercially exploited for significant wealth generation or societal benefit in the UK.

We also present the Royal Society Mullard Award to individuals whose work has the potential to make a contribution to national prosperity and we run the Royal Society Enterprise Fund, which makes investments in early-stage technology businesses.

Education schemes

• Education Research Fellowship: For academics in the UK researching physics and mathematics education who are at an early stage of their career and have the potential to become leaders in their field.

We also run the Partnership Grants scheme, which provides funding for schools to work in partnership with scientists and engineers.

Research and infrastructure schemes

• Research Grants: For scientists in the UK who are at an early stage of their career and want to purchase specialised equipment and consumables or for academics to research the history of science.
• Royal Society Wolfson Laboratory Refurbishment Grant: For scientists in the UK who want to refurbish or renovate their research laboratories.

Capacity building schemes

• Royal Society-DFID Africa Capacity Building Initiative: For scientists who want to develop collaborative research consortia between sub-Saharan Africa and a research institution in the UK.
• SABMiller Royal Society Exchange Programme: For scientists in the UK who want to stimulate collaborations with scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We also run the Royal Society Pfizer Award for scientists working in the biological sciences and the Royal Society Pfizer African Academies Programme to strengthen national science academies in Ghana, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

Collaboration and travel schemes

• Newton Advanced Fellowships: For international researchers who wish to develop the research strengths and capabilities of their research group through training, collaboration and reciprocal visits with a partner in the UK.
• Newton Mobility Grants: Funding for international researchers towards travel, subsistence and research expenses for either a one-off short visit to explore opportunities for building lasting networks or for bilateral visits to strengthen emerging collaborations
• International Exchanges: For scientists in the UK who want to stimulate new collaborations with leading scientists overseas through either a one-off visit or bilateral travel.
• India-UK Scientific Seminars: For mid-career scientists who want to organise a small three-day scientific seminar between groups of scientists from India and the UK.
• South Africa-UK Scientific Seminars: For mid-career scientists who want to organise a small three-day scientific seminar between groups of scientists from South Africa and the UK.
• International Scientific Seminars: For Royal Society Research Fellows who want to organise a small two-day scientific seminar at The Kavli Royal Society International Centre.
