13 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The subject of A.I. (and/or the singularity) is one ripe for cinematic exploration, and explore it we have — in Her, in Transcendence, in Chappie, in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and Terminator: Genisys. But as that list shows, the actual quality of those films has been all over the map. Happily, Alex Garland‘s […]

Watch: New Trailer For 'Furious 7' Is All About Family And Cars Jumping Into Skyscrapers

13 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last night at SXSW, Universal treated audiences with a "secret" midnight screening of "Furious 7." We'll have our verdict on the movie later today, but first, a new international trailer has arrived for the movie which positions it's two key selling points: it's a movie about family....where cars parachute out of gigantic airplanes and speed out of one skyscraper and crash land in another skyscraper. In case you haven't been made aware until now, this franchise has all the subtlety of a punch to the groin. Anyway, this new international spot follows the general beats of the domestic trailers, but with a good amount of new footage tossed in for good measure. You're not here to see character moments, but the sizzle reel stuff. And yes, you will get served with macho dudes fighting and expensive machines being trashed real good. Vin Diesel will never let you down. "Furious 7 »

Jack Huston and Jessica Brown Findlay to Star in 'The Crow'

13 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Crow remake over at Relativity sure has had its share of ups and downs, departures and attachments. Most recently Luke Evans dropped out of starring as the lead character, Eric Draven, a man that rises from the dead to avenge his and his fiancee's death. Now, previous rumors that Jack Huston ("Boardwalk Empire") would pick up where Evans left off appear to have come true. Reported by Dread Central, series creator James O'Barr told the site, "Jack Huston has definitely been cast. I'm really happy with that choice and the film will shoot in a couple of months." Meanwhile, we also learn Jessica Brown Findlay (A Winter's Tale, "Downton Abbey") will star as Draven's fiancee, Shelly Webster. I've never read O'Barr's graphic novel, which served as the inspiration for 1994's The Crow starring Brandon Lee, but he tells the site this new adaptation will stick much closer to the source material. »

How Batman Probably Will Be Used In Suicide Squad

13 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Batman is expected to cast a long shadow over the events of David Ayer.s Suicide Squad, and not just because he.s probably responsible for most . if not all . of the characters featured in the super-villain team up being in jail. As details of Ayer.s Suicide Squad come to light, we are learning how the Caped Crusader could be used on screen, and how his involvement clears up other details about the rest of the developing DC Cinematic Universe. The latest rumor swirling around the pre-production of Suicide Squad comes from the reliable Umberto Gonzalez of Latino-Review, who posts juicy information regarding the Batman on his Instagram page. According to his sources, the Batman (which, we assume, means the Ben Affleck version from Zack Snyder.s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) is "some sort of big boogeyman" who is despised and feared by the government. SXSW Film Review: ‘Tab Hunter Confidential’

44 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Like the autobiographical tome it’s based on, “Tab Hunter Confidential” provides a colorful, likable and unpretentious look at the 1950s Hollywood dreamboat who was living a closeted gay life even as he was marketed as every bobbysoxer’s ideal boyfriend. Sharing hissubject’s good humor about himself, prolific docu and DVD-extra director Jeffrey Schwarz (“I Am Divine,” “Vito”) has assembled a pleasing if less-than-revelatory feature that should prove particularly popular on the gay fest circuit en route to broadcast and download sales.

Although somewhatconventionally framed by the drama of an early near-outing — as a 19-year-old Hollywood newbie, Hunterwas arrested for attending a private gay party, something he recalls “would be thrown at me years later”—“Confidential” is not a story of torment in the closet. Indeed, the 2006 book Hunterwrote with Eddie Muller does a better job limning the internal and professional conflicts in hislife, »

China’s Huayi Brothers Signs 18-Movie Deal with Secret U.S. Company

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In the latest major East-West movie production and financing development, China’s Huayi Brothers Media has reached an 18-picture deal, three-year with an unnamed U.S. company.

The deal was announced as a regulatory filing in China without naming the U.S. party to the deal.

Put together through its wholly-owned Us subsidiary, Huayi will help fund, produce and distribute 18 feature films through 2017. The U.S. unit was established last September with start-up capital of $130 million.

According to the note, Huayi will also retain distribution rights in Greater China including Hk/Macau, Taiwan and Singapore.

Huayi says that that it will draw three financial benefits from the partnership: distribution fees; a direct share of global revenues; and profits in proportion to its equity positions in the movies.

“This is not only a step for Huayi Brothers’ internationalization, but also the internationalization of all Chinese film companies,” the company said.

Kevin Hart introduced his latest comedy “Get Hard” at SXSW on Monday night by telling fans to give him their reviews on Twitter. “If you don’t like it,” Hart said with a sarcastic bite, “what I want you to do is go in the middle of the street and kill yourself.” His co-star Will Ferrell added that he wasn’t as involved with social media. “Send me handwritten notes,” Ferrell said. “Hopefully, on nice stationery.”

Anthony Mackie to Star in Jesse Owens Project at Relativity

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Relativity is in talks to develop a biopic about American track and field hero Jesse Owens with Anthony Mackie attached to star.

It’s the third Owens movie in the works in Hollywood, following the completed “Race” at Focus and an untitled Owens project at Disney, based on the book “Triumph,” written Espn host Jeremy Schaap.

Owens, the son of an Alabama sharecropper, shattered Adolf Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy by winning a record four gold medals in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump and the 400-meter relay in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Hitler had insisted Jewish people and African-Americans not be allowed in the games, but relented when threatened with a boycott. He shook hands only with the German victors on the first day of competition and then skipped all further medal presentations.

Race” stars Stephan James opposite Jeremy Irons, Jason Sudeikis, Carice van Houten and William Hurt. »

What Anchorman And Elf Would Look Like With Kevin Hart Instead Of Will Ferrell

4 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart are currently hard at work promoting their upcoming film Get Hard. And in order to do just that they have not only teased that they auditioned for a number of roles that the other eventually landed, but they've created a plethora of fake failed audition tapes too. Which, as you could probably have guessed, are all hilarious. So if you.ve ever wondered what Anchorman and Elf would have looked like with Kevin Hart as the lead then you should definitely take a look. Hart and Ferrell created these clips for a Funny Or Die sketch that was simply entitled Will Ferrell And Kevin Hart.s Failed Audition Tapes. My particular highlight was seeing Kevin Hart.s failed audition tape for Elf below, especially since the diminutive comedian looked so dapper in the green attire. Hart created a fake Anchorman audition tape too, which, while »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Furious 7′

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A new director at the helm and the sudden death of leading man Paul Walker might have spelled doom for the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, but rather like one of its own seemingly indestructible muscle cars, “Furious 7” has emerged miraculously unscathed. In taking over for longtime director Justin Lin (parts 3-6), horror auteur James Wan (“The Conjuring”) ably steps up to the big-action plate, orchestrating two-plus-hours of increasingly outlandish vehicular (and aerobatic) mayhem that revs pulses and engines in roughly equal measure. Completed under what were surely challenging circumstances, but (mostly) seamless to behold, “Furious 7” provides both a satisfying chapter inthe movies’ preeminent gearhead soap opera and a tactful, touching memorial to Walker, whose final screen appearance will help ensure that this already $2.3 billion series is seven times lucky at the worldwidebox office.

When Walker died in a high-speed car crash in November 2013, he was »

Jack Black-Will Ferrell Comedy ‘Tag’ Hires Writer

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

New Line has hired Rob McKittrick to write its comedy project “Tag,” which has Jack Black and Will Ferrell attached to star, Variety has learned exclusively.

Todd Garner and his Broken Road banner are attached to produce. In 2013, New Line won a bidding war for the movie rights to a Wall Street Journal article titled “Tag Brothers” centering on 10 classmates from a Spokane, Wash., prep school who, now in their 40s, play an elaborate game of tag for one month every year.

Black and Ferrell have been part of “Tag” since it was set up. Mark Steilen was attached two years ago to write the script.

McKittrick originally broke in Hollywood with his film “Waiting,” which he directed from his own script, and has worked on several other New Line projects including “Work Wife” with Joe Swanberg attached to direct, “Mancrush” and “Catfight.”

He’s repped by Paradigm, Dmg Entertainment and attorney Jeff Frankel. »
