European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft lands probe on comet, in pictures

The first image sent back to Earth of the comet

European scientists have landed a probe on the surface of a comet, the climax of a decade-long project to unlock some of the secrets of the universe. Spacecraft Rosetta caught up with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August 2014. On Wednesday November 12, 2014 the team at the European Space Agency (ESA) watched as the Philae lander module touched down onto the comet's surface. Above, the first image sent back to Earth of the comet was tweeted by the European Space Agency: "Welcome to a comet! First CIVA images confirm @Philae2014 is on surface of #67P! #CometLanding"
