Not so long ago, suicide was a taboo topic. You just weren't supposed to talk about it. Fortunately, some people did, and we have come to understand it as a significant public health concern.
We also now understand that public awareness and open discussion are the best way to reduce and eventually eliminate suicide.
AFSP works hard to inform the public about suicide and how to prevent it. We create and share vital information here on our website and through our programs for community groups, educators, parents, students, and people who are concerned about suicide.
Our Out of the Darkness walks and public education efforts have helped to reduce the stigma associated with suicide and to heighten awareness on a national level.
