Mascot

Again, a nationwide school competition was launched in late 2013 inviting schools to participate in the design of the Official Mascot for the XV Pacific Games.

It had to be unique to Papua New Guinea, transcend all boundaries and must embody the spirit of the games – fun, enthusiastic, friendly and community minded.

The winning design, ‘Tura the Kokomo’ was by 13 year old Taka Seigori, a year 5 student from Tubuseria Primary School in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea. The Design captures the friendliness of Papua New Guinea whilst showcasing the unique flora and fauna that can be found around the country.

It depicts a modern, cheeky and funny Hornbill, known in PNG as a ‘Kokomo’, who’s  ever enthusiastic to meet people.  The name ‘Tura’ mean’s ‘Friend’ In the Motu language and fits the character of the Hornbill, known to be a ‘friendly and ‘cheeky’ bird.

The crown symbolises the colours of the 2015 Pacific Games and reflects a once in a lifetime opportunity for athletes and all stakeholders to shine and be celebrated for a lifetime. Tura the Kokomo represents the modern city of Port Moresby as welcoming and  friendly, which is the nature of the 2015 Pacific Games.

The 2015 Pacific Games is set to be the best ever and the Mascot will evoke a sense of national pride and community spirit across the Pacific.
