Mad Max Fury Road review: It's a film of visionary grandeur

After an unprecedented hiatus of 30 years, Australian auteur George Miller re-visits the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the seminal trilogy which established his reputation and propelled Mel Gibson to superstardom. As in the first three chapters of the series, there isn't much of a storyline.

At most, the reboot revolves around the water shortage plaguing the populace of a dystopian hell-hole. Under the circumstances, society has descended into chaos and mankind is reduced to a single instinct: survival.

Meanwhile, the loner anti-hero (Hardy) gets reluctantly involved in a take-no-prisoners war between a skull-masked despot (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and a one-armed woman warrior (Theron) attempting to escape to freedom with a bevy of enslaved young maidens. Aptly described by director Miller himself as "a western on wheels", Fury Road is a film of visionary grandeur which merits multiple viewing.
