The teaser of Dhanush-starrer Maari, which released late Wednesday, has all the trappings of a commercial potboiler. The 30-second video is all about Dhanush: It starts with someone smashing the window screen of a car, and from behind the flying shards of glass, we are introduced to our hero, a cigarette-smoking Dhanush. The teaser ends with mugshot of Dhanush.
So what’s new? For one, he plays a don in Maari. Interestingly, Dhanush has played anti-hero before but in this film, he will appear as a local slum chieftain. A tough-looking Dhanush, a chain smoker at that, with thick gold chains around his neck, is hardly our idea of Dhanush. But that’s him in Maari.

Co-produced by Dhanush’s Wunder Bar and Magic Frames, the film stars Kajal Aggarwal as the female lead. The music is by Anirudh Ravichander, a regular now in Dhanush films.
