A nationwide design competition was launched to create the perfect symbol for the XV Pacific Games. It had to be simple, recognizable, capture the spirit of the Games and reflect Papua New Guinea’s part in it. The winning design, by Ian Kiali, encapsulates the brotherhood and camaraderie of both Papua New Guinea and the Games. It depicts a yellow Lagatoi sail to represent the host city of Port Moresby. A black circle reflects the people of Papua New Guinea receiving friends from the Pacific nations – depicted by the red and green elements – with open arms. The blue waves and dots belong to the Pacific Games Council, which oversees the Pacific Games.
