As live

'As Live' events include content other than traditional cinema films such as stage or sporting events which are projected in cinemas. A model for labelling such content has been developed which is based on a judgement that the public will accept a slightly lighter touch regulatory regime in relation to ‘as live’ transmissions.

What can/can't I submit?

Live transmissions sit outside the scope of the Licensing Act 2003 but any delayed exhibition (or ‘as live’ exhibition) of moving pictures of a live event is caught, even if the delay is only a few minutes.

To qualify as 'As Live' an event must have taken place within the past 7 days.

Due to the nature of an 'As Live' event, there is no footage to submit however submitting companies must submit the following information to us about the As Live performance:

  • the company information
  • the title of the live performance (ie the title to be used when the performance is shown in cinemas)
  • the date of the live performance (this could be in the future)
  • the nature of the live performance (eg opera, boxing match, play, pop concert, ballet, etc)
  • details of any restrictions applying to children attending the live event, ie children under [x years] not admitted.

How do I submit?

Submissions should be made via the BBFC extranet.

How much does it cost?

Full details are available here.

Is there anything else I need to consider?

Once registration is complete we will provide you with a “white card” to be displayed in cinemas showing the performance. The white card will include the age-related symbol (12A, 15 or 18). The As Live white card should be on screen for a minimum of eight seconds in the appropriate slot prior to the screening of the As Live event.
