mergency Medicine is an exciting specialty that involves the provision of emergency medical care to patients of all ages and backgrounds. Emergency Medicine physicians must be able to rapidly assess a patient, develop a differential diagnosis, order the appropriate diagnostic studies, and provide immediate life-saving and stabilizing interventions. In order to provide this high level of care, practitioners of Emergency Medicine must integrate a solid understanding of all medical specialties, a detailed knowledge of both medical and traumatic resuscitation principles, mastery of common life-saving and diagnostic procedures, and a good understanding of the current research and evidence based medical practices.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine is dedicated to the education and training of knowledgeable, skilled and compassionate Osteopathic Physicians. The department strives to provide exceptional clinical experiences combined with a rigorous academic curriculum to ensure all medical students and graduating physicians attain a fundamental knowledge of Emergency Medicine. Through their 3rd year Emergency Medicine rotation, high quality lectures, clinical labs and the use of advanced simulation workshops, student physicians will gain the experience, knowledge, skills and procedures needed to provide a basic level of compassionate emergency medical care.
To meet these goals, the Department of Emergency Medicine at VCOM enjoys the participation of a number of high quality clinical faculty and participating institutions. From large regional Level 1 Trauma Centers to small community Emergency Departments, the Department of Emergency Medicine provides the student with an outstanding educational experience that reflects the diverse patient populations and practice settings unique to the practice of Emergency Medicine.
In addition to undergraduate medical education, we are actively involved in the development of a state of the art Simulation Center, advanced airway and ultrasound training programs, post graduate emergency medicine training, and high quality Emergency Medicine research.
