What's On TV Thursday: The Family Law

Ben Pobjie dinkus

BEN POBJIE Benjamin Law is practising his clarinet assiduously in preparation for the school talent show. His desperation to win is driven by a desire to for once gain a victory over the too-perfect kids from across the road, but there's an added wrinkle: he's hoping that if he can get his father along to the show, it will help build bridges in his parents' increasingly strained marriage. Big talent show; frustrated kid; wily schemes; it's standard sitcom fare. But The Family Law (SBS1, 8.30pm) is not a standard sitcom. There's something more complex and familiar lurking here. Maybe it has something to do with the unapologetic Australianness of it all: the suburban Queensland setting, the school hall, the low-key, restrained emotions; they owe very little to US sitcom tradition and everything to a very recognisable real-life Australia. Which is as it should be, given the show is adapted by Law from his acclaimed memoir of growing up the son of Chinese immigrants on the Sunshine Coast.

That's why Billy Crystal, and the pairing of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, are remembered with reverence. And why Seth McFarlane doesn't get asked back any more.
