WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Alix Theodossiou topped Towson's Barbora Vasilkova at No. 3 singles to clinch the match as UNCW slipped past Towson, 4-3, in a Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis match on Friday.
The conference match was scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up due to anticipated rain in the area.
The Seahawks evened their record at 5-5 this spring and stand 1-1 in conference play. Towson is 7-5 and 0-3.
The Seahawks won the early doubles point after claiming wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Madara Straume and Sabrina Barisano were the first off the court following a 6-3 verdict over Towson's Lucy Williams and Sandra Guevara. Theodossiou teamed up with Hollie Champion at No. 3 doubles and the pair delivered a 7-5 victory over A.J. Gomer and Renate von Oorschodt to help the Seahawks grab the early point.
Towson evened the score with a win at No. 6 singles, but the Seahawks regained the lead with wins at the No. 5 and No. 4 slots from Sabrina Barisano and Laura Gomez that gave UNCW a 3-1 advantage.
The Tigers then won at the top of the lineup in the next match off the court, but Theodossiou outlasted Vasilkova, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) to clinch UNCW's second straight triumph.
The Seahawks are scheduled to play another CAA match on Sunday when James Madison visits Wilmington for a 2:30 p.m. start.
