L.R. Palmer (1961: 100) assumes that the ko-re-te-re (koreter) is a “district official”. However, Palmer hedges by stating that koreter is one of the many words for Mycenaean technicalities [that] did not survive into post-Mycenaean times.”
I couldn’t disagree more: ko-re-te appears to be related to κούρητες (Curētes), which, according to Autenreith, is “a tribe in Aetolia, afterward expelled by the Aetolians.” Liddell & Scott concur, and define the Curētes as “the oldest inhabitants of the Pleuron in Aetolia” [447]. An alternate definition, which I favor in this context, pertains to “young men, esp. young warriors.” The second definition follows from κόρος (boy).
