What is the reason for deviating from the conventional format for creating an outline? Is this the format that Ventris or Killen uses? I just find it odd that the period comes before rather than after the letter: /.a /rather than /a. /. It’s more than a little distracting.

It’s part of the Wingspread convention – see http://minoan.deaditerranean.com/resources/modified-wingspread-convention/ for more details – and is used for ease of citation, i.e. “to-so from KN Am 568.a”.
