The Church of England: General Notes
Lords Spiritual
The lords spiritual are Church of England bishops who serve in the House of Lords along with the lords temporal (life or hereditary peers). They comprise the Archbishops of Canterbury and of York, the Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester, as well as the 21 longest-serving English diocesan bishops.
The former Archbishops of Canterbury and York are created lords temporal (ie receive life peerages).
Spouses
Spouses of the clergy do not have any special form of address.
Married Clergy
There is no universally accepted form of addressing an envelope to a married couple who are both in holy orders; ‘The Reverend Mark Brook and The Reverend Hazel Brook’ is acceptable.
