The Muslim Council of Britain was formed in 1997 to empower the Muslim community to contribute towards achieving a cohesive, just and successful British society. Led by Indian-born secretary-general Dr Shuja Shafi, the MCB plays a vital role in representing the beliefs and cultures of the Islamic faith within the UK. Shafi originally came to the UK to complete his training as doctor, after which he worked for many years in public healthcare, specialising in microbiology and infectious diseasesHe first began working alongside the MCB in 2000 leading its Health at Hajj and Umrah research project. Shafi has recently criticised David Cameron’s warning that Muslim women should learn English or face deportation, describing his approach as ‘clumsy and simplistic’.
