Sarah Lucas

ARTIST

One of the original YBA generation, Sarah Lucas works across photography, sculpture, collage and installation exploring such themes as gender, sex and death with typically irreverent humour. In 2015 Lucas represented Great Britain at the Venice Beninale with her major solo exhibition I Scream Daddio, which featured a sculpture titled Maradona – ‘part man, part maypole, part praying mantis’ – named after the Argentine footballer. After leaving school at 16, Lucas studied at the Working Men’s College, the London School of Printing, and Goldsmiths, where she read Fine Art. She exhibited in the famous Freeze exhibition of 1988 alongside contemporaries Damien Hirst, Angus Fairhurst and Gary Hume, emerging as one of the major British artists of the 1990s and collaborating in 1993 with Tracey Emin on The Shop, Bethnal Green Road.
