Raman Hui, BBS

When Hong Kong-born animator and film director Raman Hui first showed his script for Monster Hunt in 2009, the cross-genre animation and live action movie almost escaped notice. Its cute monsters struck a chord with young and old alike, however, and it became a blockbuster hit in 2015 as the highest grossing Chinese film ever. Until then Hui was best known for co-directing Shrek the Third and several short films, including Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, Scared Shrekless and Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos. Despite 20 years of experience in animation, he took a risk to shoot live action sequences. He learned quickly and the risk paid off.
