Sir Harpal Kumar

Newly knighted Harpal Kumar brings both technical expertise and inspiring leadership to his role in charge of Cancer Research. Having trained as a chemical engineer, he became chief executive of Cancer Research Technology Ltd before becoming chief operating officer at the charity in 2004, taking up his current role three years later. The son of Pakistani refugees, he won many prizes for his academic prowess at Cambridge and Harvard, and worked as a healthcare consultant for McKinsey and Co. He was previously chief executive at the Papworth Trust.
