Dame Sally Davies, DBE

Chief Medical Officer for England

Leading the national response to threats ranging from Ebola to bioterrorism, Dame Sally Davies is at the forefront of medical science in her role as chief medical officer. The first woman to hold the role, Davies has also been influential in encouraging greater participation in both medicine and science by women, insisting that medical schools should hold Athena SWAN silver awards, which reward efforts made to advance women’s careers in subjects including medicine, science, engineering and maths. Davies was chief scientific adviser at the Department of Health prior to taking up her current role in 2010. She recently announced much-publicised new guidelines on alcohol consumption, placing recommended levels lower than previously.
