Charles Saumarez Smith, CBE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

Charles Saumarez-Smith is the chief executive and secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts and a respected cultural historian. Under his stewardship since 2007, the RA and its impressive courtyard have been platforms for a number of high-profile single artist exhibitions, most recently of the work of Ai Weiwei, as well as the popular annual Summer Exhibition. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, Saumarez-Smith went on to study at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and the Warburg Institute. He has been director of both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery and is currently overseeing fundraising for the Royal Academy ahead of its 250th anniversary in 2018.
