Timothy Everest, MBE

Timothy Everest has made a career out of being ahead of the curve. A visual force from the 1990s, he arguably invented the New Bespoke Movement, after years under the influence of Savile Row legend Tommy Nutter. He has dressed film stars, musicians and politicians - from Tom Cruise to Gordon Brown, as well as Ralph Fiennes in his first appearance as M in 2012's Skyfall. Having once remarked that he and his staff are 'Tailors who design: not designers who discovered tailoring', his brilliant sense of the smart and the stylish shows no sign of stopping.

1. What was your biggest career break?

As a teenager I had no idea as to my career path (other than dreaming of being a racing driver) and tried many varied jobs so...my biggest career break was getting a job tailoring with my great-uncle Douglas which was a wonderful introduction to all aspects of the trade.

2. Have you had a notable mentor – and if so what was it about them that was so inspiring?

Having not chosen further education my notable mentor was the legendary Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter, which was like going to university and being paid! A gentleman who was most generous with his advice and a great inspiration for the rest of my career.

3. What one piece of advice would you give to the 20-year-old you?

To be a good listener.

4. What qualities to do you look for in new recruits?

Inspired, hardworking, ambitious and loyal.

5. Who do you admire and why?

Sir Roy Strong, as I admire what he did for British art and culture and he is sartorially interesting.

6. What does the future of your industry look like?

My industry is all about quality craft and individuality so it’s a case of back to the future. As fashion becomes old fashioned quality over quantity more people will spend less but buy better. With my business celebrating its 25th anniversary I am opening a concept store to celebrate the future of tailoring.

7. If you weren't in the role you are in today, what would you have been?

Hopefully a successful racing driver!

8. What is your biggest extravagance?

Spending time with my family and riding to work on my ‘tweaked’ vintage Vespa scooter.

9. Who would you invite to your dream dinner party and why? (you can invite three people – they must be alive)

David Bowie as I grew up with his music but was inspired by how he subverted tradition.

Ralph Fiennes as I enjoy spending time with him, having dressed him for Skyfall and Spectre (and making personal bespoke garments).

Tilda Swinton, as I created a tailored suit for her based on The Man Who Fell to Earth so there is already an interesting Bowie connection!

10. What do you do to relax away from work?

I am an avid cyclist, having worked on many cycling related projects from Rapha to Brooks and recently David Millar + Castelli. Very relaxing, as I cycle most days to London but enjoy the Surrey hills and exploring the Tuscan landscape.

11. If you could change one thing about Britain today, what would it be?

Less rain, more sun.

12. What would your last meal be? (please choose a starter, a main course and a pudding)

Cockles, cider and loveage.

Rare rib of beef with truffle mash and green beans.

Rice pudding with pistachio.
