Professor Peter Piot

Director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Belgian microbiologist Peter Piot is at the forefront of the fight against infectious diseases including Ebola and AIDS. Having first discovered the Ebola virus in the ’70s, Piot and his team travelled to Zaire to help contain the outbreak, and following its recent recurrence in western Africa, he called for the emergency release of an experimental vaccine. He was also instrumental in early research into HIV and AIDS, working on projects in African states following the first instances of the disease. In addition to academic positions, Piot has worked for the UN and World Health Organisation on research programmes into HIV and AIDS.
