Yip Wing-sie, BBS, JP

An icon of classical music in Hong Kong, Yip Wing-Sie is the music director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and its principal conductor. She has taken the orchestra on tour in recent years to Canada, the USA, Japan, Korea, France, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay as well as Beijing and Shanghai. Born in Guangzhou and raised in Hong Kong, Yip studied at the Royal College of Music in London before going on to Indiana University at Bloomington where she obtained her Master’s in violin performance and conducting. She won first prize and the Lyre d’Or in the International Competition for Young Conductors at the Besançon Festival in France in 1985, and was a prizewinner in the 8th Tokyo International Conducting Competition in 1988. Yip is the first Hong Kong conductor to receive the honour of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
