Stephanie Houghton, MBE

Captain, England Women’s Football

Centre-back Steph Houghton is captain of both Manchester City FC and the England women’s team, notching up over 60 caps for her country since her debut in 2007. In 2015 the Lionesses came third in the World Cup, the best result by an England side since the men won it in 1966. Houghton was also part of the national team to win its group at the 2012 Olympics. In 2014, Durham-born Houghton became the first female player to appear on monthly football magazine Shoot, and her onfield successes have done a huge amount to raise the profile of women in the sport. She was appointed MBE in the 2016 New Year Honours.
