The catalyst for Hong Kong’s recent cycling success, multiple Asian Games gold medallist Wong Kam-po brought cycling to public consciousness as the first cyclist to win a world title with the 15km scratch at the 2007 UCI track World Championship. One of seven children, he started work before finishing secondary school, and after much hard training became, at 17, the first person to win the Asian Junior Cycling Championships for Hong Kong. Strife among his teammates during the preparations for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics disqualified the whole team, with Wong himself banned from the team for two years. After meeting coach Shen Jiang-Kong he immersed himself in eight- to ten-hour training schedules every day, cycling 180km regardless of weather conditions. Wong rejoined the team and began a successful career, winning golds in the National Games of the People's Republic of China and the Asian Games. Wong was the first Hong Kong rider to gain Category One status in Europe, and has been voted Best Athlete several times at the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards. He now nurtures young athletes as a coach in the Hong Kong Team.
