Ronny Gottschlich

managing director, Lidl

When Ronny Gottschlich was appointed to his current role at German discounter Lidl he was its third boss in two years, but his five years in charge have seen rapid expansion, with 280 new stores currently being sought within the M25 and sales reaching a record £4 billion in 2015. Along with its competitor Aldi, Lidl has shaken up the supermarket sector by slashing prices, often selling from smaller shops and employing fewer staff to offer customers irresistible discounts. Born near Leipzig, Germany, Gottschlich received a business degree from the University of Applied Sciences in Merseburg and had worked for Lidl for ten years before becoming its CEO. Lidl set the standard for its competitors in 2015 by becoming the first supermarket to pay its staff at least the recommended living wage.
