David Beckham, OBE

Retired footballer and sports ambassador

David Beckham’s 20-year football career included six as England captain, and he amassed 115 caps for his country, an appearance record for an outfield player. Though he retired in 2013, Beckham remains an influential ambassador for sport, and in 2015 he hosted Match for Children, which featured former football greats such as Ronaldinho, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira and Ryan Giggs, raising millions of pounds for Unicef. Beckham was born in Leytonstone and his love of football was evident from a young age, with frequent trips made to Old Trafford with his family, all of whom were fanatical about Man U. Beckham played a key role in bringing the 2012 Olympics to London and his plans to create a Major League Soccer team in Miami inched closer in 2015 when MLS approved a site for a stadium.
