Ali Smith, CBE

Writer

Novelist and short story writer Ali Smith won the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2015 for her time-shifting novel How to be Both, set between the 15th Century and the present day. The novel had also won the Costa Novel Prize and been nominated for the Booker the previous year. Smith rounded off the same year by releasing short story collection Public Library and Other Stories, an expression of her dismay at the closure of many of the UK’s libraries. She was born in Inverness and studied at the University of Aberdeen and at Cambridge, where she now lives. She has published five short story collections and seven novels, and her wit, inventiveness and mastery of form have won her widespread acclaim.
