Sir Harvey McGrath

Philanthropist and Chairman, Big Society Capital and heart of the city

After a long and distinguished career in international finance, Sir Harvey McGrath has become one of the UK’s most active philanthropists. He took over from Sir Ronald Cohen as chairman of Big Society Capital, the world’s first social investment bank, in 2014, and is also chairman of Heart of the City, a network of 700 businesses in London supporting corporate social responsibility. He is also a co-founder of New Philanthropy Capital while serving on the board of trustees for many organisations. Graduating with a Masters in Geography from Cambridge before moving to the USA, McGrath’s first philanthropic activity was in the ’80s whilliving in New York and supporting March of Dimes, the charity for babies born prematurely. His philanthropy was formally recognised in the 2016 New Year Honours when he received a knighthood for his services to economic growth and public life.
