Robert Hannigan, CMG

Director, GCHQ

Just over a year after his appointment as director of GCHQ, one of the world’s most sophisticated electronic surveillance agencies, Robert Hannigan’s role is increasingly integral to the UK’s defence. As social media and technology become increasingly powerful tools of command and networking for terrorists, Hannigan’s focus is to safeguard the digital landscape and prevent it being used to instigate any future acts of terrorism. Prior to his appointment, Hannigan worked as principal adviser to then prime minister Tony Blair on the Northern Ireland peace process, and was also responsible for the UK's first cyber security strategy.
