Each week at Washington National Cathedral, we pray for one of the states of the union. Each state's seal is memorialized in our slate floors and in War Memorial Chapel. This week, we're saying special homegrown prayers for the District of Columbia:

"Sanctify anew, Thou Ruler of Destiny, this bit of Federal soil which our forefathers set apart from any State to nourish the high mission of our common government.

Bless, O Lord, the precious branches planted here:...
The deep-rooted responsibility of Law,
the even measure of Justice,
and the leadership fitly chosen and held aloft before our people.

Grant to all those who serve in this District the same vision that drew Columbus to a new world, and a kindred steadiness of purpose to that of the first President whose name and flag we bear.

So by Thy grace may we be worthy of that special place given to a capital city in Thy holy Name. Amen."

For the grace and good of the wider church, Washington National Cathedral offers the following prayer for the ‪#‎OrlandoShooting‬.

Following guidance from the White House, flags at the Cathedral will remain at half-staff through Thursday, June 16. The Cathedral will also toll its mourning bell 50 times -- once for each soul lost in Orlando -- at 11:55 a.m. on both Wednesday and Thursday. Join us on Wednesday for a FacebookLive broadcast of the tolling.

Let us pray.

...

God of peace and comfort, we come before you seeking courage and hope as your people:

We pray for your church, that our voice may be strong and clear, as we strive to bring an end to gun violence and hatred.
Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We pray for first responders, for police and EMTs, for health care workers and all who sacrifice much to serve the common good.
Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We pray for our Muslim brothers and sisters, that in this time of tension and unrest we remember that we are all beloved children of God.
Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

We pray for those who inspire hatred, for those governed by fear, and for all considering acts of violence toward others that their hearts may be changed.
Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

We pray for all who are afraid, and all who mourn. We pray for those throughout history who have suffered violence and death because of their sexual orientation or expression remembering especially those who were killed in Orlando.
Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us
through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole
human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which
infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us;
unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and
confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in
your good time, all nations and races may serve you in
harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen. (from The Book of Common Prayer)

The Cathedral will toll the Bourdon Bell at 11:55 am today for the victims of the Orlando massacre:

Almighty God, look with compassion upon all who have been injured or killed in Orlando, and upon those who love them, and upon our nation. Be with us as we struggle to understand the senseless violence of our world and the mysteries of life and death; in our pain bring your comfort, in our sorrow, bring us your hope and your promise of new life, in the name of the risen Christ. Amen.

Some comforting words from our Bishop and Interim Dean, Mariann Edgar Budde:

Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rac...hel is weeping for her children, because they are no more.” Jeremiah 31:15

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 12, 2016) — In Orlando and throughout our land, we hear the prophet’s voices of lamentation and bitter weeping as we absorb the horrific news of 50 lives lost and 53 more seriously wounded. Our hearts break for all the dead, wounded, and traumatized by this carnage, and pray for God’s strength and consoling mercies.

To our friends of the LGBT community, know that we love you and walk alongside you in your grief and pain, which is all the more searing following an attack in a presumed safe space during LGBT Pride month. Your tears are our tears. You will find shelter in our churches.

To our Muslim sisters and brothers, know that our support for you remains strong. We know that the hatred that fuels such violence is a perversion of the Muslim faith, and we remain your friends and interfaith partners.

To our fellow citizens of a nation once again scarred by gun violence, know that the killings in Orlando reinforce our resolve to work with Congress, state legislators, and law enforcement officials to rid America’s cities and towns of the weapons of war. We have seen too many killings, shed too many tears, lit too many candles to continue as we are. With such easy access to guns, no safe spaces remain.

This week, we will toll the mourning bell of the Cathedral for the lives lost in Orlando. This week, we will grieve and ready our resolve. This week and beyond, we will pray for a peaceable kingdom and work toward a world no longer haunted by the threats of terrorism, gun violence and hatred. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

An update on Sunday's Cathedral Sings! event from our friends at the Cathedral Choral Society:

In light of the sudden loss of our Music Director, J. Reilly Lewis, we have decided to change the repertoire to be a sing-along of hymns, solos, and anthems. Although it is too soon for any kind of formal service, as musicians we feel compelled to come together in song as Reilly would have wanted us to do. Giselle Becker, Music Director of Cantate Chamber Singers and a long-time friend of Reilly’s, has agreed to lead our sing-along. Todd Fickley will accompany on the Great Organ. There will be no charge and previous ticket holders will be refunded. All are welcome. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

We share this sad news from our colleagues at the Cathedral Choral Society. J. Reilly Lewis has been a large part of the Cathedral's life for many years. We offer deep condolences to all whose lives were touched by his music and ask you to keep his family in your prayers.

We are deeply saddened to share that our Music Director, J. Reilly Lewis, passed away during the night. This is devastating news for all of us and we are trying to wrap our minds around this. Our thoughts are with Beth and his family. A more formal announcement will follow.
