Hotei Publishing

Hotei Publishing specializes in books relating to Japan and is an imprint of Brill since May 2006. Established in Leiden in the 1990s, Hotei publishes exhibition catalogues, lavishly illustrated books on Japanese print artists and painters, and a variety of other manifestations of Japanese art and culture.

Whether providing new information or shedding new light on familiar territory, Hotei presents materials in accessible language with an abundance of color illustrations of superb quality, set in an attractive design. Publisher and printer go to extreme lengths to ensure that the pictures are as close to the original as possible. All Hotei publications, equally appealing to general readers, collectors, and academics, can be characterized by their efforts to combine attractive art book publishing with a scholarly approach.

Hotei Publishing works with an international team of museum curators, art historians, and specialist authors, and produces a great number of books in close cooperation with museums worldwide.  Recent highlights are The Harunobu Decade (with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, 2013) and Surimono in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2012).
