Brill is greatly saddened by the passing of Patricia Crone, Professor Emerita of Islamic History at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.

Patricia will be remembered for her ground-breaking work on the earliest history of Islam. She contributed numerous articles to the Encyclopaedia of Islam. Her Festschrift was published last year by Brill, Islamic Cultures, Islamic Contexts: Essays in Honor of Professor Patricia Crone, edited by Behnam Sadeghi, Asad Q. Ahmed, Adam Silverstein, and Robert Hoyland (Leiden, 2014). Brill will also publish 3 volumes of Crone’s Collected Studies on “The Qur’ānic pagans and related matters”; “The Iranian reception of Islam: the non-traditionalist strands” and “The ancient Near East and Islam” (forthcoming Leiden, 2016).

We were struck by Patricia’s strong and inspiring person and cherish fond memories of her last visit to Leiden, when she and Michael Cook were awarded Honorary Doctorates by Leiden University on February 8, 2013. Watch the ceremony on YouTube
