SuperCup Women

Traditionally bringing together the winners of EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women in a competition which is held ahead of the new club season, SuperCup Women first tipped-off during 2009.

It was Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje who had the honour of being crowned the first ever SuperCup Women champions - adding more silverware to a rapidly expanding collection at the time.

The Russian powerhouse was well into the process of harvesting what was to eventually be a superb four EuroLeague Women titles in a row and not surprisingly, made light work of despatching Galatasaray 92-59, in a one-off SuperCup Women Final played in Vidnoje.

A big home crowd enjoyed the hosts shoot the lights out and they had far too much firepower for the visitors, who had celebrated their first EuroCup Women success earlier in the year.

It was a similar scenario 12 months later as Sparta&K retained their title against Sony Athinaikos, who had also triumphed for the first time in EuroCup Women.

On this occasion, the game took place in Athens and Sparta&K had to work hard to take a 70-61 triumph against their Greek opponents as Noelle Quinn starred with 18 points.

Perfumerias Avenida ended the stunning EuroLeague Women dominance of Sparta&K in 2010 with a somewhat surprise first title and dethroning the Russians also meant Vidnoje relinquishing their SuperCup Women crown too.

The Salamanca-based side were only too happy to add to their impressive haul when they defeated Elitzur Ramla 95-72 during a Final that was played out in front of their own supporters inside Pabellon Wurzburg.

Spanish guard duo and namesakes, Marta Fernandez and Marta Xargay brought the noise with a combined 45 points.

While the competition didn’t take place in 2012 or 2014, UMMC Ekaterinburg brought the SuperCup Women title back to Russia in between, during 2013.

The trophy was always going to be back on Rusisan soil, since the EuroLeague Women champions matched up against WBC Dynamo Moscow - riding their way to a 72-63 victory.

When the tournament was resurrected in 2015, it was in a new and exciting Final Four format which witnessed both of the EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women Finalists.

UMMC Ekaterinburg had been surprisingly sunk when overwhelming favourites in the 2015 EuroLeague Women Final earlier in the year - meaning everyone expected them to deliver payback to ZVVZ USK Prague in the SuperCup Women.

Yet after both teams had seen off Final Four host club Mithra Castors Braine and EuroCup Women winners Villeneuve d’Ascq in the Semi-Finals, the underdogs came good yet again.

ZVVZ USK Prague defied predictions to prevail 93-91 in an absolute thriller and sublime advert for the women’s game. The Czech side made waves with another scintillating team performance, as a stunning six players all reached double-digits

They were led by 15 points and a spectacular 13 assists from Spanish veteran Laia Palau – as well as 21 points from her national team colleague, Marta Xargay, who shot a wonderful eight of nine from the floor to ensure she captured SuperCup Women for the second time in her career.
