Youth Olympic Games and other 3x3 Competitions

Beyond events organised by FIBA, 3x3 basketball is gaining popularity worldwide as an excellent alternative to five-on-five for hosting basketball events.

Simple to set-up and to play, requiring less complex equipment and infrastructure, the choice of the 3x3 format also reduces travel and accommodation costs, especially for international events.

Importantly it helps smaller regions and countries to be more competitive with only three or four players, not needing to assemble a 12-person roster.

Accordingly, 3x3 was the basketball format played at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010 and again in Nanjing in 2014. FISU (The International University Sports Federation) partnered with FIBA and launched the 3x3 World University Championships in 2012 in Kragujevac, Serbia. ISF (The International School Sport Federation) organised the first-ever ISF 3x3 Basketball World School Championship in 2014 in Beijing, China.

3x3 was played at the 2011 South Asian Beach Games in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, the 2012 Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China and the 2014 African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana and will be featured at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan
