FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, is the world governing body for basketball.

Founded by eight nations in 1932, we now bring together 215 National Basketball Federations from all over the world.

A non-profit making organisation, our mission is to develop and promote the game of basketball, uniting the wider basketball community, which counts more than 450 million players and fans.

We organise and oversee international competitions including the FIBA Basketball World Cup, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and the Olympic Basketball Tournaments.

We establish the Official Basketball Rules as well as the regulations that govern the relationships between the different members of the basketball community.

FIBA is the only authority in basketball recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

FIBA Headquarters, the House of Basketball, are situated in Mies, Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva.

FIBA has five Regional Offices to provide direct services to the National Member Federations:

    • Establishing, updating and amending the Official Basketball Rules
    • Establishing the specifications for basketball equipment and facilities
    • Establishing all regulations for international and Olympic competitions, including the system of competition
    • Appointing international referees
    • Regulating the transfer of players from one country to another
    • Governing and overseeing the organisation of all international competitions

    1936 – Basketball becomes an Olympic sport in Berlin

    1946 – Creation of the NBA (as BAA)

    1950 – First FIBA World Championship

    1953 – First FIBA World Championship for Women

    1976 – Borislav Stankovic becomes second FIBA Secretary General

    1976 – First Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament at Montreal Olympics

    1984 – FIBA introduces the 3-point line

    1989 – Munich Congress opens door for professionals

    2003 – Patrick Baumann becomes third FIBA Secretary General

    2007 – The FIBA Hall of Fame is created in Alcobendas, Spain

    2010 – 3x3 Basketball is played for the first time on the international stage at the Youth Olympic Games

    2012 – First FIBA 3x3 World Tour and FIBA 3x3 World Championship

    2013 – House of Basketball is inaugurated in Mies, Switzerland

    2014 - FIBA counts 214 member National Federations.

    2015 – On 1 January 2015, FIBA becomes ONE FIBA with Regional Offices in five continents - Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

    2015 -FIBA counts 215 National Member Federations.
