Alberto Garcia

Alberto Garcia is the Secretary General of FIBA Americas since 2006.

Born in Mendoza, Argentina on April 26, 1944.

On 1962, Faustino Centurion famed referee, invited him to join as a referee the Women's Basketball Association.  Bitten by the bug of referring, he stopped playing actively and fully engaged as a referee. In a couple of months, he was a referee of the first division.

Following its continued progress, the Federation of State nominated him as candidate for national referee, title he obtained in 1970.

With his high level, the Argentina Basketball Confederation nominated him as a candidate for International Official, a title he obtained in 1985 with the best average.

By 1983, he found another passion, teaching; and became an official instructor.

In 1984 the National Basketball League was born, were he was among the most trusted and sought-born referees.

As an international judge he concurs these championships:

  • 1982 South American Championship in Lima Peru
  • 1982 World Championships in Bogota Colombia
  • 1983 World Championship for Clubs in Argentina
  • 1985 World Championship for Clubs in Cordoba
  • 1989 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico
  • 1990 World Championship in Argentina
  • 1992 Women's World Championship in Brazil
  • 1992 Olympic Qualifiyng Championship in Portland USA. With this event he decides to end his career as an international judge.

In 1992, after ending another edition of the National League, decides to leave officiating, having been elected for 5 consecutive years the best Argentine referee.

In 1993, he achieved the title of National Instructors of judges, giving clinics across America and some European countries.

In 1996, FIBA distinguishes him among the top 5 world instructors.

In 1998, FIBA America hired him as technical director to manage all technical aspects of the events in America; this leads him to settle in the city of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

During this period attends the Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens, as well as the World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis as a technical committee of the tournaments.

In 2002, he was promoted to the charge of Under-Secretary General of FIBA Americas, a position he held until June 3, 2006, when he became Secretary General of FIBA Americas.

In office, Alberto has been major figure of the period of greatest growth of basketball in America and the world, being also part of the Central Bureau of FIBA.

Under his quartermaster, FIBA Americas has assumed responsibility as being of future development in the Continental Basketball strengthening mini basketball programs, equating women's basketball events, greatly increasing the training of coaches and referees, and offering international showcase of national leagues in America.

Finally, Garcia has been passionate about basketball all his life and his leadership is proof that the work makes a difference and that passion is the best path to success.
