REFEREE
  • Each National Member Federation has the right to choose the candidates for the title of FIBA Referee from amongst its best national referees. A National Member Federation may have an unlimited number of FIBA Referees.

    In order to obtain the title of FIBA Referee, the candidates must:

    1. Be proposed officially by their Federation
    2. Participate in a Clinic for FIBA Referee Candidates
    3. Pass theoretical (basketball rules) as well as physical fitness and practical (officiating the game) tests;
    4. Pass the English Language test

    Only the official tests and examinations established by the FIBA Technical Commission are valid.

    Clinics shall be organised by the FIBA Technical Commission with the assistance of the FIBA Secretariat. They may be organised also by a Zone Technical Commission. In this event, the programme and the names of the FIBA Instructors conducting the clinic must be submitted to the FIBA Secretariat for approval.

    The referee cannot be older than thirty-five (35) years of age when taking part in a FIBA Clinic for Referee Candidates and will not be considered FIBA Active Referee after the age of fifty (50).

  • Each National Member Federation has the right to choose candidates for the title of FIBA Commissioner from amongst its former FIBA Referees and persons active in the organisation of basketball. A FIBA Commissioner cannot be, at the same, a FIBA active Referee.

    A National Member Federation may have an unlimited number of FIBA Commissioners.

    In order to obtain the title of FIBA Commissioner, the candidates must:

    1. Bbe proposed officially by their national member federation
    2. Participate in a Clinic for FIBA Commissioner Candidates
    3. Pass all official tests as established by the FIBA Technical Commission showing sufficient English language skills and knowledge of the FIBA Official Basketball Rules, the General Statutes, and the Internal Regulations

    Clinics are organised by the FIBA Technical Commission with the assistance of the FIBA Secretariat. They may also be organised by a Zone Technical Commission. In this event, the programme and the names of the FIBA Instructors conducting the clinic must be submitted to the FIBA Secretariat for approval.

    The commissioner cannot be older than fifty-five (55) years of age when taking part in a FIBA Clinic for Commissioner Candidates and will not be considered a FIBA Active Commissioner after the age of seventy (70).

  • Each National Member Federation of FIBA has the right to choose candidates for the title of FIBA Honorary Referee from amongst its former FIBA Referees and persons who have served basketball in the development of referees. A FIBA Honorary Referee cannot be, at the same time, a FIBA active Referee.

    A National Member Federation may have an unlimited number of FIBA Honorary Referees.

    The proposal of the national member federation must be accompanied by the following documents for each candidate:

    1. Honorary Referee Information Form
    2. One (1) recent colour passport-sized photo
    3. Copy of the passport showing family and first name(s), date of birth and legal nationality

    If the proposal is accepted by the Secretary General, the FIBA Secretariat will issue the FIBA Honorary Referee license, valid for life, for a nominal fee to be paid only once (Refer to article 3-305).
