The Library collects many different types of electronic, or non-print items, and provides access to more of this content via subscriptions. The different types of material includes:
- Electronic journals
- Electronic books
- Archived websites
- CD-ROMs
Our Remote Eresources service makes a small number of our subscribed resources available remotely to registered Reader Pass holders.
But most of the electronic resources are only available to registered Readers using the Library's PCs in our Reading Rooms; since the majority of this content is either legal deposit or subscribed content, which has license restrictions.
Non-print legal deposit content
Legal deposit covers not only printed publications, but also material published digitally and online. This means that Legal Deposit Libraries can provide a national archive of the UK’s non-print published material, such as websites, blogs, e-journals and CD-ROMs.
Electronic journals
The Library subscribes to circa 45,000 electronic journals, and newspapers, (e.g. Acta Juridica, The Athenaeum, Industrial Robot, Law and Labor, Nature, The New York Times).
You can search for journals and newspapers, by title, in Explore the British Library. Alternatively, many eJournal collections and databases allow you to cross search titles for articles.
Databases
The Library subscribes to circa 800 indexing and abstracting, bibliographic, biographic and full text databases, e.g. 19th Century Masterfile, Art Index, Business Insights, JSTOR, NTIS, PolicyFile.
Whilst the majority of the databases listed are subscribed and only available in our Reading Rooms, the list does include some freely available databases and useful websites, e.g. AGRICOLA, Care and Health Law, Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers, Fedstats.
