ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

What started as a call for a report of a stolen vehicle in Albemarle County ended up taking a very different turn for investigators.

Officers were on the lookout for that vehicle Tuesday, July 12, when they came across an abandoned pickup truck on Presidents Road in the area of Scottsville.

Inside the pickup truck, police found materials used to make methamphetamine.

Albemarle County Fire and Rescue units were called to the scene before 11 a.m. to assist in the investigation. A hazmat crew later determined it was not any kind of operational meth lab.

Police say the abandoned truck was stolen out of Buckingham County. Officers say it could be that the vehicle became inoperable and was dumped off by whoever took it.

Authorities are searching for the person(s) responsible, and are reminding the public to be vigilant.

"Just be safe. And if you see anything suspicious, or anybody suspicious that doesn't look like they belong around your home or your neighborhood, give us a call," said Albemarle County Police Corporal David Wallace.

Investigators also say they do not know for certain if there is a connection between the pickup truck found and the one reportedly stolen on Presidents Road.

Initially it was thought that maybe the person who abandoned the vehicle was armed, but there is no threat to public safety.

The Albemarle County Police Department says the investigation is ongoing.

Statement from Albemarle County Police Department:

Around 10:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a stolen vehicle on Presidents Road at Blenheim Road in Scottsville.

While investigating that call, officers located a stolen vehicle out of Buckingham County and found drug paraphernalia inside.

For safety purposes, Albemarle County Fire and Rescue were called out to investigate and determined it not to be an operational lab of any sort.

This is an ongoing investigation.
