CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Advocates for renewable energy held an all-day demonstration on the Downtown Mall to teach people more about solar panels.

Representatives from Charlottesville's Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) and Sigora Solar brought a solar panel to show people how they work, and why they should invest in them.

"Solarizing is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and have a better impact on the environment. And also just to reduce your energy bills," said Tammy Rykal with LEAP.

Friday’s demonstration is part of the Solarize Charlottesville program, an initiative by the city and Albemarle County to get residents to use solar power.

The programs offer several financial incentives, including a price discount from Sigora Solar.

Charlottesville offers a tax credit of almost 5 percent for having solar panels. The federal government offers a 30 percent deduction for solar power system costs.

The average cost to install solar panels on a house is roughly $13,000.

Since the Solarize Charlottesville program started two years more than 120 homes have installed solar panels.
