Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad Urges Caution in Extreme Heat

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

In light of the dangerously high temperatures central Virginia is expected to see this weekend, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad has advice to keep you safe.

Most heat-related illnesses are just heat exhaustion. That's when people feel lightheaded, dizzy and weak. Common symptoms are muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

There is a fine line between just being overheated and actually suffering from heat stroke though.

“The main difference between the heat exhaustion and the heat stroke-- and this is a big takeaway here-- is that you stop sweating, your skin is no longer moist from the sweat, and your skin becomes dry, red and hot to the touch,” said Pete Davidson of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.

That's when you need to call 911. At that point, your body temperature can be above 104 degrees , and once it starts rising, it's hard to get it back under control.
