CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Charlottesville’s planning commission is taking to the streets and touring different areas in the city that have been designated for small area plans.

Commissioners took a walking tour of the Emmet Street neighborhood Tuesday. They looked at what the areas look like now and what they might look like in the future.

Commissioners say they want to be able to see what people in Charlottesville are seeing on a daily basis. They've narrowed their focus down to Woolen Mills, Cherry Avenue, and Emmet Street North.

They say it's about staying ahead of the game, predicting where the next big development will be, and then working within that infrastructure.

"We have a number of hotels that are located there currently. We have unknowns concerning what's gonna happen on Emmett Street, so it'll be interesting to see how that fits into things. But we also have a lot changes down there with Rio and how that may affect circulation, as well as the new Stonefield. And we've got some new development opportunities, and some are in the works, and some not quite there yet on the city side,” said Missy Creasy, assistant director of neighborhood development services.

Tuesday’s tour of Emmett Street was the last scheduled session.

The planning commission will reconvene in September where they will prioritize which neighborhood will benefit the most from small area plan projects.
