CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Charlottesville police now believe a man found dead along the Rivanna Trail Saturday took his own life.

Officers discovered the body on a beach area along the river Saturday morning.

The Police Department is assuring the community there is no safety concern along the trail because of this incident.

Updated Press Release from Charlottesville Police Department 07/31:

UPDATE: 7/31/2016: Charlottesville Police Investigators are currently investigating this case as an apparent suicide. While a preliminary identification of the body has been made that identification will not be released until confirmation is made by the state Medical Examiner’s office. This process can be lengthy.

The Charlottesville Police Department wishes to reassure the public there is no safety concern on the Rivanna Trail because of this incident.

Press Release from Charlottesville Police Department:

At approximately 11am on today’s date, officers with the Charlottesville Police Department were dispatched to the Rivanna Trail for a report of a body that was found at one of the beach areas. Upon arrival officers found a white male who was deceased.

This incident is currently under investigation and as additional details become available they will be released.
