Baby Week 19

Sippy cups are one of the next big steps for your baby. Not only will it help teach your baby how to drink from a cup, but it could give you some relief if you are exclusively breastfeeding. Babies generally like the independence the sippy cup brings.

To make it an easier transition, one big tip is to not put breast milk or formula in the sippy cup. Your baby may not like having to work for something that has always come so easily from your breast or the bottle. Instead, use this opportunity to introduce your baby to some diluted juice or something new they want to try.

Week 19 Milestones

Your baby may be discovering his legs! You might find him being able to easily stand while holding onto your hands. He might also be able to pull himself up with the coffee table, couch or chair. These are leg strengthening exercises your baby will use to help him walk and run in a few months.

What Might Concern You at 19 Weeks

Baby Week 19

Do your baby's naps seem to be getting shorter and less frequent? At this age many babies begin to sleep less and play more during the day. The "norm" for babies of this age take three or four naps of about an hour a piece. However, some babies will take several short naps, while others will take two long naps.

The number and length of naps taken is not what is really important at this stage of your baby's life. What is more important is the total amount of sleep your baby is getting in a 24 hour period. Your baby should be getting approximately 14 hours of sleep at this point of life in a 24 hour period, but even that can vary. If you don't think your baby is getting enough rest, check with your doctor.
