CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

The University of Virginia Student Council is working to honor U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan.

Khan, a 2000 graduate of UVA, was killed by a car bomb while on guard duty in Baghdad in 2004. The 27-year-old soldier was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service.

Khan's parents have been in the headlines following a speech given at the Democratic National Convention.

The coverage and fallout from Capt. Khan's father’s speech prompted students at the university to discover that no alumni killed during military service is recognized on the UVA Rotunda.

This week, the UVA Student Council signed a resolution to hang a plaque with Khan's name, as well as other alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice serving in the armed forces for the United States.
